Complete success of Xi Jinping’s visit takes relations with DPRK to new height

Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and President of the People’s Republic of China, paid a state visit to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), from June 8-9 at the invitation of his DPRK counterpart Kim Jong Un.

Xi Jinping, together with his wife Peng Liyuan and his delegation, arrived at Pyongyang’s Sunan Airport at around noon where they were greeted by DPRK leader Kim Jong Un and his wife Ri Sol Ju.

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that:

“The historic Pyongyang meeting between the top leaders of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and the People’s Republic of China was arranged again at a time when the traditional DPRK-China friendship, forged in the long journey for independence against imperialism, peace and the accomplishment of the socialist cause, weathering all hardships of the times, is being developed at a new strategic level.

“Comrade Xi Jinping’s visit to the DPRK in the significant year marking the 65th anniversary of the conclusion of the DPRK-China Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance serves as the important and meaningful one in developing the DPRK-China friendly and cooperative relations, the strategic option and valuable common asset of the two parties and the peoples of the two countries.”

A welcoming ceremony for the Chinese leader was held in Kim Il Sung Square in the heart of the DPRK capital.

As Xi Jinping and his wife arrived by car, a cavalry escort lined up to welcome them while the military band played welcoming tunes. Kim Jong Un and his wife greeted Xi Jinping and his wife at the square. Xi Jinping and his wife, along with Kim Jong Un and his wife, shook hands with their respective accompanying personnel. The top leaders of the two parties and two countries jointly ascended the review stand as the military bands played the national anthems of China and the DPRK, with a 21-gun salute. Accompanied by Kim Jong Un, Xi Jinping inspected the honour guard of the three services of the Korean People’s Army. Guardsmen shouted in Korean, “Wish Comrade Xi Jinping good health”. Afterward, Xi Jinping and Kim Jong Un watched the march-past together.

En route from the airport to Kim Il Sung Square and then from Kim Il Sung Square to the Kumsusan State Guesthouse, where Xi Jinping stayed during his visit, people of the DPRK lined both sides of the streets, waving to welcome Xi’s arrival.

The two leaders held talks during the afternoon.

Xi Jinping noted that after seven years, he is very pleased to once again visit the beautiful city of Pyongyang and feels especially warm and familiar. He expressed his readiness to work with Comrade General Secretary to take this visit as an opportunity to strengthen top-level planning and strategic guidance for China-DPRK relations in the new era, promote bilateral relations advancing with the times and achieving greater progress, so as to better benefit the two countries and peoples, and make positive contributions to peace, stability, development and prosperity in the region and the world.

Xi stressed that China and the DPRK are both socialist countries led by communist parties. The traditional friendship between the two countries is rooted in their shared ideals and beliefs as well as their common goals, and is backed by a profound historical foundation, a solid political basis and strong emotional bonds. Friendship passed down from generation to generation, a shared future and mutual support have always been the defining features of China-DPRK relations. No matter how the international situation changes, the Chinese party and government’s firm stance on highly valuing China-DPRK traditional friendship will not change, the firm support for General Secretary Kim Jong Un in leading the DPRK’s socialist cause will not change, and the firm commitment to safeguarding the shared interests of the two countries and preserving a favorable strategic environment will not change.

Xi Jinping pointed out that, in the face of the profound changes unseen in a century that are accelerating across the world, the two sides should take a broad and long-term view, build on past achievements and open up a new future, draw wisdom from the development process of the relations between the two parties and the two countries, seize opportunities in the prevailing trend of human history, inject new contemporary connotations and strong impetus into the traditional friendship between China and the DPRK, and open up a brighter prospect for the socialist cause of the two countries as well as regional peace and development.

He put forward four proposals on developing China-DPRK relations:

  • The two sides should stay guided by the high-level exchanges and consolidate the foundation of political mutual trust. The strategic guidance by the top leaders of both nations is the greatest strength of China-DPRK relations. This year marks the 65th anniversary of the China-DPRK Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance, and both sides will hold grand commemorative events. The relations between the two parties play an important guiding role in the development of China-DPRK relations. Both sides should enhance exchanges in diplomacy, law enforcement, military affairs and others, implement the important consensus reached between the two leaders, and pool wisdom and strength for the development of China-DPRK relations.
  • The two sides should stay committed to the goal of delivering benefits to the people and elevate the level of practical cooperation. China stands ready to work with the DPRK to strengthen the alignment of development strategies and expand practical cooperation in such areas as economy and trade, agriculture, construction, science and technology, as well as health care, to bring greater benefits to the two peoples.
  • The two sides should uphold the inheritance of friendship as a driving force and strengthen the bonds between their peoples. The traditional friendship between China and the DPRK, forged in blood, is a valuable shared asset of the two peoples. China stands ready to work with the DPRK to preserve and properly manage the memorial facilities dedicated to the Chinese People’s Volunteers martyrs in the DPRK, carry out distinctive programs on revolutionary traditions and youth education, and pass on the red legacy and traditional friendship between the two countries.
  • The two sides should uphold fairness and justice as a guiding principle to enrich the substance of strategic coordination. In response to the major question of where humanity is headed, he has proposed the vision of building a community with a shared future for humanity and the four global initiatives, which aim to steer global governance toward greater fairness and justice and have won broad support and positive responses from the international community, including the DPRK.

Kim Jong Un stated that Comrade General Secretary Xi Jinping is the most respected guest of the DPRK people, and his country extended the warmest and most cordial welcome to Xi, who visited the DPRK after a seven-year interval. General Secretary Xi Jinping’s choice of Pyongyang for his first overseas trip this year fully reflects the great importance he attaches to DPRK-China relations and the profound friendship between the two countries, which is a tremendous encouragement to the DPRK side. This visit once again clearly demonstrates how unbreakable the DPRK-China relations are, which have stood the test of time and always stand on the right side of history by upholding independence and justice. The special nature of the bilateral relations lies not only in the fact that the two countries are close neighbours, but also in the deep traditional friendship and shared ideals and convictions, which both sides cherish and are committed to carrying forward from generation to generation.

He voiced sincere appreciation for the important proposals put forward by Comrade General Secretary Xi Jinping on advancing DPRK-China relations in the new era, adding that relevant departments of the DPRK side will work closely with their Chinese counterparts and make every effort to fully implement the proposals, promote new progress in bilateral exchanges and cooperation in such areas as economy and trade, infrastructure, science and technology, education, as well as people-to-people and cultural exchanges, and strengthen exchanges of experience and mutual learning through inter-party channels to provide valuable support for the development of the DPRK’s socialist cause, so as to help the DPRK people advance toward modernisation together with the Chinese people.

Kim Jong Un further stated that the DPRK is pleased to see that, under the leadership of Comrade General Secretary Xi Jinping, China has achieved development accomplishments that have amazed the world and significantly enhanced its international status. The concept of a community with a shared future for humanity and the four global initiatives proposed by General Secretary Xi Jinping carry profound significance for promoting world peace and development and have won the support and appreciation of people around the world. The DPRK will, as always, regard the development of DPRK-China relations as the foremost strategic undertaking of the state, spare no effort to build bilateral relations into a model of interstate relations, and work together with China to contribute to peace and prosperity in the region and the world.

KCNA further reported Kim as saying that the constancy and invincibility of the DPRK-China relationship is special in terms of the tradition of friendship, the common cause of socialism and the invariable inheritance. He gave a high appreciation of the fact that exchange and cooperation between the two countries have vigorously developed in various aspects after the Beijing meeting in September 2025.

Our party, government and people are rejoiced over the fact that the Chinese party, government and people have achieved great world-startling successes in building a modern socialist country and raised their international position to the absolute height under the wise guidance of Comrade Xi Jinping, he said, stating that, no matter how the situation may change, our party and government will fully support the policy and stand of the Chinese party and government to defend their core interests on the “one-China” principle.

In the evening, Xi Jinping and his wife attended the welcoming banquet held by Kim Jong Un at the Mokran House.

In his speech, Xi Jinping pointed out that China and the DPRK, linked by mountains and rivers and sharing a common future, have seen their traditional friendship passed down across generations and grow ever stronger over time through the test of the evolving international landscape. This year marks the 65th anniversary of the China-DPRK Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance, and the China-DPRK relationship stands at a new historical starting point. Xi Jinping said that he has reached important consensus with General Secretary Kim Jong Un during his visit. From the strategic perspective of the future and destiny of socialism, both leaders have agreed to seize the general trend of the times, respond to the shared aspirations of the two peoples, strengthen high-level exchanges, deepen strategic communication, expand practical cooperation, enhance people-to-people bonds, promote the high-level development of China-DPRK relations, jointly open up brighter prospects for the socialist cause of both countries, and contribute to the continuous progress of human society.

Xi Jinping added that the successful convening of the Ninth Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK) this year has made strategic plans and major arrangements for the long-term development of the Party and the country’s cause, ushering in a new period of comprehensive development of the DPRK’s socialist cause. As good neighbours, good friends and good comrades, the Chinese side sincerely wishes that, under the strong leadership of the Central Committee of the WPK headed by General Secretary Kim Jong Un, the DPRK people will successfully accomplish the goals and tasks set by the Ninth Congress of the WPK and make constant new achievements in the socialist cause of the DPRK.

On behalf of the WPK, the government and the people of the DPRK, Kim Jong Un extended the warmest welcome to Xi Jinping on his visit. Kim Jong Un stated that Pyongyang was filled with an atmosphere of friendship on this special day as the DPRK’s Party, government and people warmly welcomed their most distinguished guest. General Secretary Xi Jinping’s first overseas trip of the year had brought him to the DPRK, which fully demonstrated the great importance he attached to developing relations between the two parties and the two countries, and constituted the most valuable support for the DPRK’s socialist cause.

KCNA reported that Comrade Kim Jong Un said that he warmly welcomed Comrade General Secretary Xi Jinping, who paid a state visit to the DPRK with the warm feelings of fraternity and friendship with the DPRK people once again, on behalf of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea and the government of the DPRK and on his own behalf, adding that the great enthusiasm for welcome witnessed on the streets of Pyongyang and along the route clearly shows the comradely friendship and fraternal feelings of the WPK and DPRK people toward Comrade Xi Jinping and the Chinese party and people and the power of the invincible DPRK-China friendly relations.

Comrade Kim Jong Un noted that the will of the peoples of the two countries to jointly build a beautiful future on the road of struggle for socialism was reaffirmed through the Pyongyang meeting and talks.

Saying that the two parties and two countries could consolidate the bonds of unity and cooperation, sharing their destiny for a long time as they are not merely neighbours naturally and topographically but they are united on the basis of the commonness of ideology and militant friendship, he expressed the will to develop the DPRK-China friendship with good history and tradition as the foundation into a model of the most powerful and strategic relations between socialist countries by leading it to a new height.

Following the banquet, the two leaders and their wives watched an artistic performance at the Pyongyang Gymnasium.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry noted that: “The performance was passionate and magnificent, reflecting the profound friendship between the Chinese and DPRK peoples. Through songs, dances, acrobatics and other artistic forms, the performers extended a warm welcome to Xi Jinping on his return visit to the DPRK after seven years and expressed their sincere hope for consolidating and developing the traditional friendship and cooperation between China and the DPRK. Familiar songs such as ‘My Motherland and Me’, ‘Jasmine Flower’ and ‘Red Flag Fluttering’ resonated strongly with the audience and drew repeated rounds of applause.”

KCNA added: “The famous songs of the two countries dealt with the ardent patriotism, the firm will for defending peace and the indomitable pioneering spirit the fraternal peoples have displayed in the long journey for building powerful socialist countries under the uplifted red flag, overcoming all challenges of history in the East of the earth. They added to the precious and intimate feelings of friendship between the peoples of the two countries who have demonstrated the tradition of comradely friendship and unity while devoting their precious blood and sweat to socialist construction century after century with one noble idea.”

The performance ended with the finale ‘DPRK-China Friendship Is Everlasting’.

The following morning, Xi Jinping and his wife, accompanied by Kim Jong Un and his wife, paid homage at the China-DPRK Friendship Tower.

In the exhibition hall, Kim Jong Un briefed Xi Jinping on historical materials, photographs, and paintings on display, which depict the Chinese People’s Volunteer Army fighting side by side with the Korean people, during the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea (1950-53) and jointly rebuilding their homeland after the war. Xi Jinping paused for an extended period to observe the exhibits carefully. He also read through the Volunteer Army martyrs list and briefed Kim Jong Un on relevant details of the martyrs.

Xi Jinping and Kim Jong Un agreed that the period of the 1950s, when China and the DPRK fought side by side, remains an enduring historical memory for both sides. The two sides should jointly safeguard the memorial facilities dedicated to the martyrs of the Chinese People’s Volunteer Army, and carry out distinctive education on revolutionary traditions and ideological and moral education for young people, so as to carry forward the great spirit demonstrated in the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, and ensure that the traditional friendship between China and the DPRK will be passed on from generation to generation.

A feature article carried by the Xinhua News Agency explained that: “The Friendship Tower was built in 1959 to honour martyrs of the Chinese People’s Volunteers (CPV) in the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea (1950-1953) … Since the tower’s erection, it has been expanded by the DPRK and renovated several times. Commemorations have been held at the site on key occasions, including anniversaries of the CPV’s entry into the DPRK to fight in the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, the Korean War armistice, and China’s Qingming Festival, also known as Tomb-Sweeping Day.

“In a previous state visit to the DPRK seven years ago, Xi and Peng also paid homage to CPV martyrs at the Friendship Tower, accompanied by Kim and Ri. Kim has also visited the tower on multiple occasions to lay wreaths and pay tribute to CPV martyrs.

“The monument consists of 1,025 pieces of granite and marble, symbolising Oct. 25, 1950, the date on which the CPV entered the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea… At the centre of the exhibition hall stands a one-tonne marble pedestal bearing volumes listing the names of fallen CPV soldiers, many of whose names are familiar to generations of Chinese people.”

Following the ceremony at the Friendship Tower, Xi Jinping and Kim Jong Un visited the Central Cadres Training School of the Workers’ Party of Korea.

KCNA reported that: “Being honoured to have the great leaders of the two parties on its campus soon after it marked its 80th founding anniversary, the school, the supreme political one of the DPRK, was filled with a warm atmosphere for welcoming them at a historic time when communication, concerted action and close cooperation between the two ruling parties of the two countries constantly advancing under the banner of socialism have been placed on a new strategic level.”

Comrade Kim Jong Un briefed Comrade Xi Jinping on the history of the school which has contributed to the cause of building the working-class party by performing its sacred mission and role to guarantee the lifeline and future of the Party for a long period of the Korean revolution.

The top leaders of the two parties took an electric car to go round the campus of the school while exchanging open-hearted views on the system of training future party cadres and educational systems and contents peculiar to party schools.

They planted a fir tree, considered to be evergreen, together in commemoration of their visit to the school.

Following these visits, Kim Jong Un and his wife hosted a private luncheon for the Chinese leader and his wife.

Xi Jinping thanked Kim Jong Un for the warm hospitality and thoughtful arrangements for the visit, noting that through the visit, the warmth and friendship extended by the DPRK party, government and people towards the Chinese party, government and people is felt even more deeply. Xi Jinping added that he and General Secretary Kim Jong Un reached important consensus on developing China-DPRK relations in the new era and had an in-depth exchange of views on safeguarding regional and global peace and stability. Xi Jinping concluded his visit and left Pyongyang for Beijing in the afternoon. Kim Jong Un, along with his wife Ri Sol Ju, went to the airport to see Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan off and held a grand farewell ceremony in their honour.

Along the route to the airport, people from all walks of life in Pyongyang gathered on both sides of the road, waving the national flags of China and the DPRK as well as flowers. They chanted slogans of friendship between the two countries to give a warm send-off.

“Comrade Xi Jinping’s recent visit, to be specially recorded in the history of the development of the DPRK-China relations in the new era, constitutes a clear demonstration of the invincibility and immutability of the DPRK-China friendship and the most powerful political encouragement to our Party and state.”

At the point of departure (in what the Chinese Foreign Ministry described as “an affectionate farewell”) “Comrade Kim Jong Un and Comrade Xi Jinping firmly shook hands with each other and exchanged farewells full of warm trust and friendship, expressing their unshakable will to lead the sacred cause for the coprosperity and development and revolutionary unity of the peoples of the two countries and the victory of socialism on to a higher stage in conformity with the requirement of the new era.”

In a message of thanks sent to Kim Jong Un following his departure, Xi Jinping wrote: “You, Comrade General Secretary, made sincere and detailed arrangements for the visit and the Korean party, government and people splendidly and enthusiastically welcomed the Chinese delegation. This fully showed the deep friendship between the two parties and two countries of China and the DPRK…

“Looking ahead into the future, I am ready to, together with you, Comrade General Secretary, steadily and successfully defend, successfully consolidate and successfully develop the China-DPRK relations by taking hold of the trend of the times and on the basis of the fundamental and long-term interests of the two countries, and thus make a new and greater contribution to the progressive work for promoting powerful advance of the socialist cause of the two countries, providing the peoples of the two countries with better welfare and achieving global peace and development.

“I am looking forward to meeting you, Comrade General Secretary, again.”

Commenting on the visit, Liu Haixing, head of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee (IDCPC), who accompanied Xi Jinping, said that the two sides discussed plans for the development of bilateral relations and shared their visions for bright prospects for the socialist cause of both countries.

Liu said the visit was a complete success, with the main achievements highlighted in three aspects:

  • The top leaders of the two parties and two countries have steered the course and provided guidance for the China-DPRK relationship to advance with the times. Xi said no matter how the international situation changes, the Chinese party and government’s firm stance on highly valuing China-DPRK traditional friendship will not change, the firm support for Kim in leading the DPRK’s socialist cause will not change, and the firm commitment to safeguarding the shared interests of the two countries and preserving a favorable strategic environment will not change.

Xi Jinping noted that after seven years, he is very pleased to once again visit the beautiful city of Pyongyang, and feels especially warm and familiar.

Xi Jinping stressed that China and the DPRK are both socialist countries led by communist parties.

Xi Jinping put forward four proposals on developing China-DPRK relations.

First, the two sides should stay guided by the high-level exchanges and consolidate the foundation of political mutual trust. The strategic guidance by the top leaders of both nations is the greatest strength of China-DPRK relations. Xi Jinping stands ready to maintain close strategic communication with Comrade General Secretary and guide China-DPRK relations to continuously reach new heights. This year marks the 65th anniversary of the China-DPRK Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance, and both sides will hold grand commemorative events. The relations between the two parties play an important guiding role in the development of China-DPRK relations. The two sides should further expand and invigorate friendly exchanges at various levels and in various fields between the two parties, and deepen exchanges of experience and mutual learning on party and state governance. Both sides should enhance exchanges in diplomacy, law enforcement, military affairs and others, implement the important consensus reached between the two leaders, and pool wisdom and strength for the development of China-DPRK relations.

Second, the two sides should stay committed to the goal of delivering benefits to the people and elevate the level of practical cooperation. China stands ready to work with the DPRK to strengthen the alignment of development strategies, and expand practical cooperation in such areas as economy and trade, agriculture, construction, science and technology, as well as health care, to bring greater benefits to the two peoples. Both sides should leverage the opportunity of the full reopening of border crossings and the resumption of civil aviation flights and international passenger trains to increase people-to-people exchanges and foster mutual interaction.

Third, the two sides should uphold the inheritance of friendship as a driving force and strengthen the bonds between their peoples. China is also ready to work with the DPRK to make full use of each side’s strengths and resources, enhance exchanges and cooperation in education, culture and the arts, tourism, sports, media, youth affairs, subnational engagement and sister-city relations, and ensure that the traditional friendship between China and the DPRK takes deeper root in the hearts of the two peoples.

Fourth, the two sides should uphold fairness and justice as a guiding principle to enrich the substance of strategic coordination. In response to the major question of where humanity is headed, he has proposed the vision of building a community with a shared future for humanity and the four global initiatives, which aim to steer global governance toward greater fairness and justice and have won broad support and positive responses from the international community, including the DPRK. Asia is the common home where regional countries, including China and the DPRK, live and thrive. The two countries should strengthen strategic coordination, firmly safeguard their respective sovereignty, security and development interests, and jointly uphold regional peace and development.

This visit once again clearly demonstrates how unbreakable the DPRK-China relations are, which have stood the test of time and always stand on the right side of history by upholding autonomy and justice. The special nature of the bilateral relations lies not only in the fact that the two countries are close neighbors, but also in the deep traditional friendship and shared ideals and convictions, which both sides cherish and are committed to carrying forward from generation to generation.

Kim Jong Un stated that since his meeting with General Secretary Xi Jinping in Beijing last September, the bilateral relations have achieved positive progress in various fields, bringing tangible benefits to the two peoples. He voiced sincere appreciation for the important proposals put forward by Comrade General Secretary Xi Jinping on advancing DPRK-China relations in the new era, adding that relevant departments of the DPRK side will work closely with their Chinese counterparts and make every effort to fully implement the proposals, promote new progress in bilateral exchanges and cooperation in such areas as economy and trade, infrastructure, science and technology, education, as well as people-to-people and cultural exchanges, and strengthen exchanges of experience and mutual learning through inter-party channels to provide valuable support for the development of the DPRK’s socialist cause, so as to help the DPRK people advance toward modernization together with the Chinese people.

Kim Jong Un stated that the DPRK is pleased to see that, under the leadership of Comrade General Secretary Xi Jinping, China has achieved development accomplishments that have amazed the world and significantly enhanced its international status. The concept of a community with a shared future for humanity and the four global initiatives proposed by General Secretary Xi Jinping carry profound significance for promoting world peace and development, and have won the support and appreciation of people around the world. The international community is undergoing unprecedented and profound changes in recent years. The DPRK will unwaveringly uphold the one-China principle and firmly support China’s policies and positions on safeguarding its core interests. Consolidating and developing the DPRK-China friendship in the new era is the choice of the peoples of the two countries and a necessity of the times, and remains the DPRK’s consistent strategic choice and steadfast strategic resolve. The DPRK will, as always, regard the development of DPRK-China relations as the foremost strategic undertaking of the state, spare no effort to build bilateral relations into a model of interstate relations, and work together with China to contribute to peace and prosperity in the region and the world.

Feature: How Pyongyang’s Friendship Tower bears witness to enduring China-DPRK bond

PYONGYANG, June 9 (Xinhua) — Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Chinese President, and his wife, Peng Liyuan, paid homage to the China-DPRK Friendship Tower on Tuesday, opening the second day of his state visit to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).

Upon their arrival at the Friendship Tower, which stands at the foot of Moran Hill in downtown Pyongyang, the couple was greeted by Kim Jong Un, general secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK) and president of the State Affairs of the DPRK, and his wife, Ri Sol Ju.

The Friendship Tower was built in 1959 to honor martyrs of the Chinese People’s Volunteers (CPV) in the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea (1950-1953).

Three massive gilded Korean characters reading “Friendship Tower” adorned the facade of the stately monument, gleaming in the summer sunlight.

After the national anthems of China and the DPRK were played, and honor guards laid the flower basket, Xi approached the flower basket and arranged the ribbon, which read, “The martyrs of the Chinese People’s Volunteer Army live forever.”

In a solemn atmosphere, all present paid silent tribute to the martyrs. Afterward, Xi and Kim watched a march-past by the honor guard.

Since the tower’s erection, it has been expanded by the DPRK and renovated several times. Commemorations have been held at the site on key occasions, including anniversaries of the CPV’s entry into the DPRK to fight in the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea, the Korean War armistice, and China’s Qingming Festival, also known as Tomb-Sweeping Day.

In a previous state visit to the DPRK seven years ago, Xi and Peng also paid homage to CPV martyrs at the Friendship Tower, accompanied by Kim and Ri. Kim has also visited the tower on multiple occasions to lay wreaths and pay tribute to CPV martyrs.

Those past commemorations, along with Tuesday’s ceremony, embody deep remembrance of the revolutionary martyrs, and underscore the importance both sides attach to preserving and carrying forward their traditional friendship.

The monument consists of 1,025 pieces of granite and marble, symbolizing Oct. 25, 1950, the date on which the CPV entered the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea.

Inside the Friendship Tower, an exhibition hall displays a rich collection of historical materials, photographs and oil paintings, depicting the friendship sealed in blood between the two peoples during the war.

At the center of the exhibition hall stands a one-tonne marble pedestal bearing volumes listing the names of fallen CPV soldiers, many of whose names are familiar to generations of Chinese people.

Xi examined the exhibits and carefully looked through the roster of the martyrs, briefing Kim on the fallen soldiers.

The two leaders agreed that the years when China and the DPRK fought side by side in the 1950s are an eternal historical memory shared by both sides.

More than seven decades ago, the CPV crossed the Yalu River and fought alongside the DPRK people. After two years and nine months of arduous fighting, they secured victory in the war.

Through shared hardships and life-and-death struggles, the peoples and armed forces of the two countries forged a friendship seeded in blood, he added in the address.
