At the UN Security Council and on the streets of Taipei, Chinese people speak out for Palestine

China has firmly condemned the Israeli government’s genocidal plan to reoccupy Gaza.

Speaking at a United Nations Security Council meeting on August 10, Ambassador Fu Cong said that: “The Gaza conflict has persisted for 22 months, leading to over 61,000 civilian deaths and resulting in an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe… Given the urgency at hand, the international community, including the Security Council, must take all necessary actions before a greater disaster unfolds.”

He then put forward ‘four musts’:

  • Any attempt to occupy Gaza must be firmly opposed. Gaza belongs to the Palestinian people. It is an integral part of the Palestinian territory. Any action that seeks to alter its demographic and territorial structure must be met with utmost rejection and resistance.
  • The illusion of military supremacy must be abandoned… The country with significant influence over the parties must uphold a just and responsible stance and take concrete steps to push forward a ceasefire. [Referring to the United States, which was alone among Security Council members in refusing to criticise Israeli actions.]
  • The humanitarian disaster in Gaza must be alleviated. Gaza is on the verge of famine, with nearly 200 people having already died of starvation. Israel issued forced evacuation orders one after another, affecting over 87% of the Gazan territory and repeatedly displacing more than 1.9 million people. The lives of two million Gazans must not be the sacrifice of the war. The weaponisation of humanitarian supplies is unacceptable. The collective punishment of the Gazan people is unacceptable. Attacking civilians and humanitarian workers as they search for supplies is equally unacceptable.
  • The prospect of the two-State solution must be reinvigorated. Implementing the two-State solution is the only viable path to resolving the Palestinian question.

Meanwhile, on August 3, the Middle East Monitor, citing the Andalou News Agency, reported that hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists in Taipei, capital of China’s Taiwan, banged pots and pasted mock banknotes smeared with red dye symbolising blood on Israeli and Taiwanese separatist flags outside Taiwan’s “Foreign Ministry”. They accused Taipei’s envoy to Israel of pledging money to a health centre inside an illegal Israeli settlement in the occupied West Bank and demanded that the Taiwan authorities halt all financial assistance to Israel. The website noted that Taiwan, “has deepened ties with Israel since the Gaza war erupted nearly two years ago. It has launched a parliamentary friendship group, donated $500,000 to Israeli medical patrols, opened a reciprocal working-holiday program, as well as encouraged technology and trade cooperation.”

The Taiwan International Workers Association, which fights for the rights and interests of migrant workers on the island, says that several Taiwanese firms supply components used in American and Israeli weapons systems.

Remarks by Ambassador Fu Cong on the Palestinian-Israeli Issue at the UN Security Council Briefing

President,

China supports the initiative of the United Kingdom, Denmark, France, Greece, and Slovenia to convene this meeting. We also thank Assistant Secretary-General Miroslav Jenča and Mr Ramesh Rajasingham for their briefings.

The Gaza conflict has persisted for 22 months, leading to over 61,000 civilian deaths and resulting in an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe. Despite repeated calls from the international community for a ceasefire and cessation of fighting, the situation, worryingly, continues to evolve in an even more dangerous direction. Given the urgency at hand, the international community, including the Security Council, must take all necessary actions before a greater disaster unfolds. I wish to share four points.

First, any attempt to occupy Gaza must be firmly opposed. The recent approval by Israel’s security cabinet of a plan to take over Gaza is a matter of grave concern for China. We urge Israel to stop this dangerous move at once. Gaza belongs to the Palestinian people. It is an integral part of the Palestinian territory. Any action that seeks to alter its demographic and territorial structure must be met with utmost rejection and resistance.

Second, the illusion of military supremacy must be abandoned. Military means are not the way to solve this problem. An immediate ceasefire is the only right way to save lives and secure the release of hostages. Continually escalated military offensives in Gaza will only lead to more killings and deaths. We have also noted that an immediate ceasefire and the return of hostages are the very wishes of the Israeli people and the families of the hostages. The Israeli Government needs to listen to the calls of both the international community and its people, immediately stop escalating tensions, and put an end to its military operations in Gaza. The country with significant influence over the parties must uphold a just and responsible stance and take concrete steps to push forward a ceasefire.

Third, the humanitarian disaster in Gaza must be alleviated. The weaponization of humanitarian supplies is unacceptable. The collective punishment of the Gazan people is unacceptable. Attacking civilians and humanitarian workers as they search for supplies is equally unacceptable. Israel must fulfill its obligations under international humanitarian law as an occupying power, open all border crossings, lift restrictions on aid access, ensure the large-scale, swift, and safe entry of humanitarian supplies into Gaza, and support the UN in its aid delivery in accordance with the humanitarian principles.

Fourth, the prospect of the two-State solution must be reinvigorated. Implementing the two-State solution is the only viable path to resolving the Palestinian question and achieving the peaceful coexistence between Palestine and Israel. Last week’s high-level conference on implementing the two-State solution witnessed strong, resounding calls in support of the two-State solution. This positive momentum should be maintained at the international level to redouble efforts to advance the political process of the two-State solution and jointly counter any unilateral move that sabotages its foundation.

China stands ready to work alongside the international community to advance an end to the war in Gaza, alleviate the humanitarian catastrophe, and implement the two-State solution, ultimately achieving a comprehensive, just, and lasting solution of the Palestinian question.

I thank you, President.

Hundreds protest against Taiwan’s ties with Israel amid genocide in Gaza

Hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists on Sunday banged pots and pasted mock banknotes smeared with red dye on Israeli and Taiwanese flags outside Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry, accusing Taipei’s envoy to Israel of pledging money to a health center inside an Israeli settlement in the occupied West Bank, Anadolu reports.

The latest protests were triggered after Israel Ganz, chairman of an umbrella organization of settlement communities (Yesha Council), shared on social media that Taipei’s representative in Tel Aviv Abby Lee promised last month support to the Nanasi Medical Center, part of the Binyamin Regional Council north of Jerusalem.

“Taiwan loves to say ‘Taiwan Can Help’,” activist Aurora Chang told the demonstrators. “But right now, we are helping a genocidal state!”

Protest leaders demanded the Taiwanese government halt all financial assistance to Israel, which has killed more than 60,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip since October 2023, and “admit its complicity in the ongoing famine in Gaza.”

A statement said any funding for the clinic “would be tantamount to legitimizing and maintaining Israel’s system of apartheid—a violation of international law.”

Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry, however, has denied any pledge.

It said Lee’s July visit was only to “explore medical cooperation” and noted a $500,000 donation Taiwan made last year to Palestinian refugees through Mercy Corps NGO.

Taiwan, which does not recognize Palestine, has deepened ties with Israel since the Gaza war erupted nearly two years ago.

It has launched a parliamentary friendship group, donated $500,000 to Israeli medical patrols, opened a reciprocal working-holiday program, as well as encouraged technology and trade cooperation.

The Taiwan Alliance for a Free Palestine, along with other human rights groups such as the Taiwan Alliance for Human Rights and the Taiwan International Workers Association, say several Taiwanese firms supply components used in American and Israeli weapons systems, a charge officials have not addressed publicly.

  1. I am from Vancouver,Canada and i want to say :What is Happening in Gaza is A Genocide Not A Conflict. Who Do the Chinese Gov’t be talking to with regard to the so called Two State Solution. The Palestinians i have been talking to Don’t like the Two State Solution. It is an Insult to them.
I also wanted to mention the Good Friend of Palestine, Yemen who has done more for Palestine that all western countries together ! Yemen does what it says with regard to Palestine. The western Gov’ts only Talks while Palestinians are dying by the Hundreds in Gaza by Starvation and by been sniped by Israelis and Americans from GHF. These western Countries should force Israel to let Trucks with Food through to Gaza instead of talking about It ! Yemen is leading the Way in helping the People of Gaza. Yemen is a Country to be Proud of !
