The top leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), Kim Jong Un visited Beijing, September 2-4, to participate in the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. His first visit to China in six years drew extraordinary global attention, not least due to the high levels of protocol and hospitality extended by the Chinese side. Kim Jong Un joined Russian President Vladimir Putin in flanking Chinese President Xi Jinping on the rostrum of Tienanmen Square, denoting their status as the chief guests among 26 heads of state and government, as well as senior representatives of dozens of nations and international organisations. It was also the first occasion for Kim Jong Un to participate in this type of multilateral gathering of world leaders and the first time for a DPRK leader to review a military parade in China since founding President Kim Il Sung participated in the 1959 tenth anniversary celebrations of the founding of the People’s Republic.
Arriving in the afternoon of September 2, Kim Jong Un was greeted at Beijing Railway Station by Cai Qi, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and member of the Secretariat and Director of the General Office of the CPC Central Committee, Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister, Yin Yong, Mayor of Beijing, and other senior officials.
On the evening of September 4, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and President Xi Jinping held talks at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing with General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK) and President of the State Affairs of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong Un.
Xi Jinping noted that China and the DPRK are good neighbours, good friends and good comrades who have shared weal and woe and helped each other in time of need. The friendship between China and the DPRK has a long history. Both countries are socialist countries led by communist parties, having common ideals, convictions and aspirations.
Xi Jinping extended congratulations on the (October 10) 80th anniversary of the founding of the WPK and stressed that China is going all out to build a great modern socialist country in all respects and pursue national rejuvenation through a Chinese path to modernisation, while the DPRK has kept making new progress in developing socialism. The CPC and the Chinese government attach great importance to the traditional friendship between China and the DPRK, and stand ready to maintain, consolidate and develop China-DPRK relations. No matter how the international landscape may evolve, this position will stay unchanged. China will continue to support the DPRK in pursuing a development path suited to its national conditions and opening new grounds in advancing the DPRK’s socialist cause. China will work with the DPRK to step up high-level exchanges and strategic communication, strengthen exchanges of experience in governance of Party and state affairs, deepen mutual understanding and friendship, promote closer interactions at all levels, and advance practical cooperation across the board.
Xi Jinping underscored that facing unprecedented global challenges, he has put forward the vision of building a community with a shared future for humanity, the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, the Global Civilisation Initiative and the Global Governance Initiative, which have been actively supported and echoed by the DPRK.
Kim Jong Un noted that the grand commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War has attracted the world’s attention. It demonstrates China’s firm commitment to upholding world peace, and underscores China’s significant international stature and influence. The older generation of DPRK and Chinese leaders forged a profound friendship in the war of resistance against Japanese aggression, and the two sides are duty-bound to carry the legacy into future generations. No matter how the international situation may change, the friendly sentiment between the DPRK and China will not change. The DPRK thanks China for its long-standing, unwavering support to the DPRK’s socialist cause and for the valuable assistance and help provided in this regard.
The DPRK will deepen mutually beneficial economic and trade cooperation with China and work for more fruitful outcomes. The DPRK commends China for its just position on the Korean Peninsula issue and stands ready to step up coordination with China at the UN and other multilateral platforms to uphold the common and fundamental interests of the two sides.
Later in the evening, Xi Jinping had a small-group tea chat with and hosted dinner for Kim Jong Un. The only other leader to be accorded a similar level of personal hospitality during the intense diplomatic period that featured the summit meetings of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) as well as the commemoration of the war victory was President Putin.
Whilst in China, Kim Jong Un also held a bilateral meeting with President Putin.
Putin highly appreciated the matchless bravery and heroism of the DPRK soldiers displayed in the operations for liberating Kursk, saying that the relations between the two countries are special ones of trust, friendship and alliance. He noted that Russia would always remember sacrifices made by the DPRK army and asked Kim Jong Un to convey the warmest greetings to all the DPRK people on behalf of the Russian people.
Kim Jong Un expressed deep thanks for this. He said that the DPRK would fully support the struggle of the Russian government, army and people for defending the national sovereignty, territorial integrity and security interests and remain faithful to the implementation of the inter-state treaty between the DPRK and Russia, regarding it as a fraternal duty in the future, too.
Kim Jong Un also interacted with a number of other leaders during his stay, including Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko, who he invited to visit the DPRK.
Reporting Lukashenko’s subsequent greetings to Kim Jong Un, sent on the occasion of the DPRK’s September 9 national day, the Belarusian Telegraph Agency (BelTA) quoted the President as saying: “I warmly recall our recent meeting in Beijing. I confirm my readiness to visit your country at the earliest time convenient for both sides to bring interstate relations to a qualitatively new level.”
The DPRK leader was accorded the same degree of protocol on his departure from Beijing for home as on his arrival. Expressing thanks to the sincerity of the Chinese party and government for making the greatest effort in good faith for his successful visit, Kim Jong Un wished the PRC eternal prosperity and its people wellbeing.
The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) commented: “Kim Jong Un’s visit to the PRC marked a historic occasion which further strengthened the political trust and strategic cooperation between the two parties and two countries and showed the invariability and invincibility of the DPRK-China friendly relations that were formed in the joint struggle for the victory of the socialist cause and overcame all sorts of trials and challenges.”
A few days later, on September 9, Xi Jinping sent Kim Jong Un a congratulatory message on the 77th anniversary of the founding of the DPRK.
Xi Jinping pointed out that over the past 77 years, the WPK has united and led the DPRK people to forge ahead unremittingly, promoting the continuous development of all socialist undertakings in the DPRK. In recent years, under the leadership of the WPK headed by General Secretary Kim Jong Un, the DPRK people have strived hard to fulfill the goals and tasks set out at the 8th Congress of the WPK and have achieved many gratifying accomplishments. Xi Jinping expressed confidence that the DPRK people will greet the convening of the 9th Congress of the WPK (due to be held in 2026) with high morale and outstanding achievements and open a new chapter in the development of socialism with DPRK characteristics.
Maintaining, consolidating, and developing China-DPRK relations has always been an unwavering strategic guideline of the CPC and the Chinese government. Recently, General Secretary Kim Jong Un came to China for the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.
