Premier Li Qiang joins celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the Workers’ Party of Korea in Pyongyang

The Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK), the ruling party in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), celebrated its 80th founding anniversary on October 10.

Congratulating his Korean counterpart Kim Jong Un, General Secretary of the WPK, Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC), wrote that over the past 80 years, the WPK has united and led the people of the DPRK to forge ahead and overcome difficulties, making impressive achievements in advancing their socialist cause.

In recent years, Comrade General Secretary has led the Party and people of the DPRK to work relentlessly to strengthen party building, develop the economy and improve people’s livelihood, he said.

Xi wished that under the strong leadership of the WPK headed by Comrade General Secretary, the socialist cause of the DPRK will continue to achieve new accomplishments, and the country will greet the successful convening of the WPK’s 9th Congress.

Noting that both China and the DPRK are socialist countries led by communist parties, Xi said that in recent years, he has held multiple meetings with Kim to guide and steer the development of relations between the two parties and two countries, opening a new chapter in the China-DPRK friendship.

Xi also recalled Kim’s recent visit to China to attend the commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, during which the two leaders had in-depth discussions and charted the course for further developing the friendly and cooperative relations between China and the DPRK.

No matter how the international situation changes, it remains the unwavering policy of the CPC and the Chinese government to maintain, consolidate and develop China-DPRK relations, Xi noted.

Chinese Premier Li Qiang, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, led a delegation of the Chinese party and government to attend the celebrations in the DPRK capital Pyongyang.

Upon arrival on October 9, Li said that China and the DPRK, as socialist neighbours connected by mountains and rivers, enjoy a profound traditional friendship.

In recent years, under the strategic guidance and personal efforts of General Secretary Xi Jinping and General Secretary Kim Jong Un, China-DPRK relations have been brimming with new dynamism and vitality, he said.

In September, General Secretary Kim came to China to attend the commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War and the top leaders of the two parties and the two countries held another successful meeting and reached a series of important consensus, charting the course for the development of bilateral relations.

Li Qiang met with Kim Jong Un the same day.

According to the Xinhua News Agency, the Chinese premier said that China is ready to work with the DPRK to further carry forward their traditional friendship, deepen practical cooperation, and closely coordinate and cooperate in international and regional affairs.

Li also called on the two sides to strengthen multilateral collaboration, firmly safeguard and practice multilateralism, and promote the development of the international order in a more just and equitable direction.

Kim asked Li to convey his sincere greetings and best wishes to General Secretary Xi and warmly welcomed the Chinese party and government delegation to the DPRK for the celebratory event, noting that under General Secretary Xi’s wise leadership, China has achieved tremendous accomplishments in socialist construction.

Noting that DPRK-China relations are unbreakable, Kim said that consolidating and developing the friendly cooperative ties between the two countries remains the unwavering stance of the party and government of the DPRK, regardless of changes in the international situation.

The meeting was also reported by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

On October 11, Li met with his DPRK counterpart Pak Thae Song.

Li Qiang pointed out that both China and the DPRK are striving to advance the cause of socialist development. China is ready to work with the DPRK to tap the potential for practical cooperation and add more impetus to their respective development. The people of China and the DPRK share a profound and special friendship, and both sides should strengthen exchanges and mutual visits at all levels in such fields as youth, culture, education, arts and sports, and continuously deepen the friendly feelings between the people. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Chinese People’s Volunteers entering the DPRK to fight in the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea. China is ready to work with the DPRK to hold commemorative events. At a time when the international landscape is undergoing complex and intertwined changes, both sides should enhance unity and cooperation, safeguard their legitimate rights and interests, and uphold international fairness and justice.

Pak Thae Song said that the historic meeting between General Secretary Kim Jong Un and General Secretary Xi Jinping in Beijing not long ago has provided strategic guidance and injected strong impetus into the development of DPRK-China relations. The WPK, government and people of the DPRK hold sincere and friendly feelings towards China. It is the unwavering position of the WPK and the government of the DPRK to consolidate and develop the unbreakable DPRK-China relations. The DPRK is willing to work with China to implement the important common understandings reached by the top leaders of the two parties and the two countries, strengthen exchanges on governance experience, expand friendly exchanges, deepen cooperation in various fields, and work closely together on the path of realising the socialist cause, so as to constantly open up a new chapter in the friendship and cooperation between the DPRK and China. The DPRK firmly supports China in safeguarding its core interests and is willing to jointly commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Chinese People’s Volunteers entering the DPRK to fight in the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea. Both sides should maintain close multilateral collaboration and uphold common interests.

The meeting was also reported by KCNA.

On October 10, Li Qiang paid homage to the martyrs of the Chinese People’s Volunteer Army (CPV) at a cemetery in Anju.

The premier said 75 years ago, the CPV soldiers, carrying the great trust of the Chinese people, crossed the Yalu River, and fought alongside the army and civilians of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) to defend peace and justice.

After two years and nine months of bloody battles, they finally won a great victory, he added.

“With deep reverence, we pay tribute to the CPV martyrs who sacrificed their lives heroically, and express our profound remembrance,” Li said, adding that the motherland and the people will never forget the immortal feats they have forged with their flesh and blood.

He also paid tribute to the CPV martyrs at the Friendship Tower and visited the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun to pay respects to late DPRK leaders President Kim Il Sung and Chairman Kim Jong Il.

Also visiting the DPRK for the anniversary was the Shanghai Art Troupe, who performed the revolutionary dance drama “The Eternal Wave”.

According to an article published by People’s Daily, and carried on the website of the Chinese Embassy to the DPRK, the drama is based on the life of Li Bai, one of the “100 heroes and exemplary figures who have made outstanding contributions to the founding of New China”, and is set in Shanghai on the eve of liberation in the late 40s of the last century. It noted that:

“Rodong Sinmun, the official newspaper of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea, reported on the 10th that the dance drama ‘Never Dying Radio Waves’ vividly presented the fearless sacrifice and heroic fighting spirit shown by the underground workers of the Communist Party of China in the process of realising the cause of national liberation with a compact plot and elegant dance, and won warm applause from the audience. The performance of Chinese artists on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Workers’ Party of Korea is an important opportunity to further enhance the friendship between the people of the DPRK and China.”

On October 17, Kim Jong Un replied to the message of greetings from Xi Jinping. He wrote that:

“I could feel once again the special feelings of friendship and invariable support of You, Comrade General Secretary, and the Chinese Party and people to our Party and people on the occasion of the October holiday.

“It is the consistent stand of our Party and the government of the Republic to successfully inherit the traditions of the DPRK-China friendly and cooperative relations and further strengthen and develop them as required by the new era.

“We will as ever positively propel the vigorous development of the DPRK-China friendly relations in the common struggle for accomplishing the socialist cause together with the Chinese comrades and thus contribute to promoting the wellbeing of the peoples of the two countries and defending the regional and global stability.”

Earlier, on October 1st, Kim Jong Un had sent a message to Xi Jinping greeting the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. He wrote that:

“Over the past 76 years since the founding of new China, the Chinese people have achieved noticeable successes in the struggle for defending the sovereignty of the country and its territorial integrity and building a modern socialist state, resolutely weathering through all challenges and trials under the leadership of the CPC.

“We are convinced that the Chinese people will, in the future, too, firmly unite around the CPC with comrade general secretary as its core and continue to open up a new phase of vigorous and dynamic state development, thus surely winning a brilliant victory in the historic long journey for realising the dream of prosperity of the Chinese nation,” adding:

“The DPRK-China friendship provided by the leaders of the elder generations of the two countries has been steadily consolidated and developed generation after generation, overcoming all the tempests of history in the common struggle for the cause of socialism.

“The magnificent commemorations of the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, which were held with splendour in Beijing on September 3 as a grand political festival, marked an important occasion in which the PRC clearly demonstrated its overall national power and international position.

“It is the steadfast stand of our Party and the government of the Republic to steadily develop the traditional DPRK-China friendship no matter how the international situation may change.”

Xi Jinping replied on October 12, stating:

“For 76 years after the founding of new China, the CPC has united and led the peoples of different ethnic groups across the country, thus successfully paving the way to socialism with the Chinese characteristics and entering the new course for comprehensively building a modern socialist state. And the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation has entered an irreversible historical course.

“China and the DPRK are good neighbours, good friends and good comrades sharing destiny and helping each other and the traditional friendship between the two countries is growing stronger with the passage of time.

“Days ago, you, Comrade General Secretary, visited China and participated in the commemorations of the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. And I met with you, Comrade General Secretary, again and prepared with joint efforts a blueprint for the development of the relations between the two parties and the two countries.”

On October 8, Rodong Sinmun, the newspaper of the WPK, carried a guest article by Chinese Ambassador to the DPRK Wang Yajun, entitled, “Continuing Traditional Friendship and Creating a Better Future”.

Wang wrote that: “On September 3, General Secretary Xi Jinping and General Secretary Kim Jong Un stood side by side on the Tiananmen Gate Tower and watched the grand military parade with the leaders of more than 20 countries, which is not only a high tribute to the common historical memory and victory monument, but also a vivid portrayal of the traditional friendship between China and the DPRK that has been passed down from generation to generation.

“As the Chinese Ambassador to the DPRK, I have the honour to witness the historic moment of the meeting between the top leaders of the two parties and two countries, and I feel more deeply that the strategic communication and guidance of General Secretary Xi Jinping and General Secretary Kim Jong Un is the fundamental guarantee of bilateral relations. Under the wise leadership of General Secretary Xi Jinping and General Secretary Kim Jong Un, China-DPRK relations will surely ride the wind and waves and move forward.

“The traditional friendship between China and the DPRK has come from the flames of the struggle for national independence, has experienced the tempering of the just war to resist US aggression and aid Korea, and has been continuously consolidated and developed with the socialist revolution and construction process of the two countries. In the two and a half years since I took office, I have always felt the deep foundation of the traditional friendship between China and the DPRK, forged in the revolutionary struggle of blood and fire.

“I visited the former residence of the Baekdusan Secret Camp, the Samjiyeon Revolutionary Historical Site, and also visited Putcheon-eup, the historical site of the Battle of Putcheonbong, on the 88th anniversary of the victory in the Battle of Putcheonbong. Wherever I go to a historical site of the Anti-Japanese War, I recall the heroic epic of the Chinese and North Korean military and civilians fighting side by side between the white mountains and black waters and bravely repelling the Japanese invaders. I paid my respects and swept more than 20 memorial facilities for the martyrs of the Chinese Volunteer Army in Pyongyang City, Kaesong City, Hyocang County in South Pyongan Province, Unsan-gun in North Pyongan Province, and Jangjin-eup in South Hamgyong Province. Every time I went to the Volunteer Martyrs’ Cemetery, I was moved by the emotions and actions of the DPRK Party, government and people who attached importance to China-DPRK friendship and remembered the martyrs of the Chinese People’s Volunteer Army, and I was moved by the fighting friendship between China and the DPRK made of blood. History and reality have proved that the traditional friendship between China and the DPRK has withstood the test of international changes and has endured for a long time and is unshakable.”

He added: “Since taking office, I have visited 12 of the 13 provinces and cities of the DPRK, and I am deeply impressed by the new look of the vigorous development of the DPRK’s socialist construction. Everywhere I went, I witnessed the great development achievements of the DPRK under the wise leadership of the Workers’ Party of Korea headed by General Secretary Kim Jong Un, and felt the sky-high enthusiasm of the Korean people to unite as one and work bravely to implement the eight goals of the DPRK.”

On October 9, the DPRK Embassy in Beijing held a reception to mark the party founding anniversary, attended by Cai Qi, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau and member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee.

Cai said that China firmly supports the WPK and the DPRK people in following a development path suited to their national conditions. China is willing to work with the DPRK to earnestly implement the important consensus reached by the top leaders of the two parties and countries, strengthen strategic communication, deepen exchange and mutual learning, expand practical cooperation, write a new chapter in China-DPRK relations in the new era, and make positive contributions to regional peace, stability, development and prosperity.

DPRK Ambassador Ri Ryong Nam said that President Kim Il Sung accomplished the cause of party building before the nation-building and army-building after the liberation and wisely led the Party-building work in the whole period of his revolutionary leadership and that Chairman Kim Jong Il provided the guidelines for the Party-building of the leader and carried them out without fail.

The traditional DPRK-China friendly and cooperative relations provided and cultivated with much care and handed down as a precious strategic legacy by the leaders of the elder generations of the two countries are steadily developing onto a higher stage under the intention and leadership of the top leaders of the two parties and two countries.

Besides the delegation headed by Premier Li Qiang, a large number of foreign visitors joined the celebrations in Pyongyang. They included:

Friends of Socialist China co-editor Keith Bennett visited in his capacity of Vice Chair of the Kim Il Sung Kim Jong Il Foundation (KKF).

The celebrations were organised on the grand and spectacular scale for which the DPRK is well known and included a national meeting, a mass gymnastics and artistic performance, a military parade, a mass procession and a torchlight gala.

Kim Jong Un made a number of significant speeches.

On a visit to the Party Founding Museum, he said that:

“Our Party is proud that it laid the foundations of socialism on this land in the face of manifold challenges and trials, that it is striving hard to build a powerful country, which no one would dare to provoke, and that it has defended the glory of socialism, which must never be buried in history, through an indomitable struggle over the past arduous 80 years.

“The socialism the generation opted for in the days of taking the first step towards building our Party in the liberated country was Korean-style socialism that conforms to our actual conditions, and the way of building it was from A to Z self-sustenance and self-determination, i.e., believing in the people and relying on their strength.

“The history of our revolution and socialist construction gives clear answers to the questions of how a party, the people and socialism can be bound together with shared destiny, how the party can gain the dignity and fame as an ever-victorious guide and how the ordinary and simple people can become a great people with a strong character and temperament.

“Today we need the same spirit, courage and self-confidence as we had at the time when the Party and a new country were built.

“Leading officials of the Party and the state should keep the Party’s original ideals and spirit as their mental attributes, have a correct understanding of the requirements of the times and reality and the essence and core of the Party’s policies, and firmly cherish the intrinsic nature of the communists who shoulder their responsibilities while directly connecting all issues to the future of the Party and the state.

“Our Party will accelerate the advance of the revolution, sweeping away all evil practices such as ignorance, incompetence, irresponsibility, self-protection, formalism and expediency, as well as arbitrariness, high-handedness and abuse of power which are rejected by the people and cause damage to socialism.

“When we feel tired and when we need greater courage, we should take to heart the spirit and fighting will of the Party-founding generation, who held high the red flag only in their empty hands and cut their way through bloody battles to bring about a new world of communism, and should display high enthusiasm for the revolution.”

Speaking at the national meeting, he said:

“The past 80 years were really complicated and arduous, yet worthwhile and glorious.

“Those years witnessed a hard-fought war for repulsing the armed invasion by the allied imperialist forces and defending the land and dignity of the country, processes for building a country and creating a life again from scratch, and social revolutions that were accompanied by an acute class struggle and elimination of factions in the Party.

“Following the establishment of the socialist system in our country, we found ourselves standing at the forefront of the most acute confrontation between the progressive and the reactionary and between socialism and imperialism. Given the geopolitical position of the country, our Party had to adopt a more resolute approach towards performing its mission of defending socialism; it had to give a strong impetus to implementing the cause of building the country’s self-reliant defence capabilities. As the vicious schemes for isolating and stifling the country economically persisted from one century into the next, it had to cope with these schemes proactively and aggressively while pushing forward with the gigantic projects for socialist construction.

“Particularly, amidst the worldwide political upheaval in the 1990s, it had to defend our ideology and social system, and entering the new century, in order to cope with the growing nuclear war threats by the US imperialists, it had to lead the people to make a new leap forward in socialist construction while simultaneously carrying on economic construction and build-up of the nuclear forces.”

He added: “Always aware of and guarding against the possible budding of authoritarianism and a number of other problems which are likely to separate the Party from the masses as its ruling years get longer and one generation is replaced by another, we have made sure that an absolute spirit of serving the people prevails across the Party. This is an important factor in our Party’s winning the unchanging trust of the people and encouraging them to entrust by themselves their destiny to our socialist state as a whole.

“Our Party has struggled under the uplifted banner of independence and socialism in any adversity; this has made an enormous historic contribution to implementing the common cause of mankind for justice and peace.

“Our Party has cherished as part of its faith the validity of the socialist cause and the inevitability of its triumph and perfectly proved the scientific accuracy of its ideals both in theoretical and practical terms, thus offering a substantial contribution to building a powerful barrier against the allied imperialist forces’ schemes against socialism and achieving solidarity and unity among the world’s progressive forces.

“Our Party and government are still coping with our adversaries’ ferocious political and military moves of pressure by pursuing harder-line policies, holding fast to firm principles and employing brave, unflinching countermeasures. This is powerfully propelling the growth of the progressive camp against war and hegemony, and the international prestige of our Republic as a faithful member of the socialist forces and a bulwark for independence and justice is further increasing with each passing day.”

Towards the conclusion, he stated: “A party that is among the people, not standing above them, a party that shares with them aspirations and ambitions, wisdom and strength, and sweets and bitters, can never disintegrate and does not lose vigour and vitality forever.

“It always remains as iron truth that our Party cannot exist apart from the people and that the Party is great as the people are great.

“I would like to offer thanks once again to our great people who have always injected strength and wisdom into our Party and devoted pure mind and diligent efforts with belief in victory as well as the Party, while pioneering the arduous and yet sacred socialist cause for as long as 80 years.

“When we strive for some more years in the same spirit as now, we can well change our life remarkably and get closer to the goals we aspire to.

“Availing myself of this opportunity, I will always cherish love for the people and not neglect my obligation of requital. I affirm my commitment to working harder to live up to their trust.”

At the military parade, he said:

“To defend the sovereignty of the DPRK and protect the security and interests of the Korean people is the supreme duty and absolute mission assumed by our army.

“Our army should continue to grow into an invincible entity that destroys all threats approaching our range of self-defence by dint of its political, ideological, military and technical superiority overwhelming the enemy, and it should steadily strengthen itself into elite armed forces which win victory after victory on the strength of morality and discipline.

“I take this opportunity to affirm that our Party and the government of the Republic, together with the powerful revolutionary armed forces, will, in the future, too, fulfil their responsibilities in the joint struggle of the progressive mankind for opposing injustice and hegemony and defending justice and peace.”

Chinese premier arrives in DPRK for WPK’s 80th anniversary celebrations, visit

PYONGYANG, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) — Chinese Premier Li Qiang arrived on Thursday to attend the 80th anniversary celebrations of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK) and pay an official goodwill visit to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).

Li, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, makes the trip at the invitation of the Central Committee of the WPK and the government of the DPRK.

Upon arrival, Li said that China and the DPRK, as socialist neighbors connected by mountains and rivers, enjoy a profound traditional friendship.

In recent years, under the strategic guidance and personal efforts of General Secretary Xi Jinping and General Secretary Kim Jong Un, China-DPRK relations have been brimming with new dynamism and vitality, said Li.

In September, General Secretary Kim came to China to attend the commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War and the top leaders of the two parties and the two countries held another successful meeting and reached a series of important consensus, charting the course for the development of bilateral relations, he said.

The Chinese premier pointed out that China stands ready to work with the DPRK to follow through on the important consensus reached by the two top leaders, strengthen strategic communication, maintain close exchanges and push for friendly cooperation between the two countries, so as to make greater contributions to regional and world peace, stability and prosperity.

China ready to strengthen strategic communication with DPRK, says Premier Li

PYONGYANG, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) — Chinese Premier Li Qiang said on Thursday that China stands ready to strengthen high-level exchanges and strategic communication with the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).

Li, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks during his meeting with Kim Jong Un, general secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK) and president of the State Affairs of the DPRK.

Li conveyed General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee Xi Jinping’s cordial greetings and best wishes to General Secretary Kim, as well as his warm congratulations on the 80th anniversary of the founding of the WPK.

Li noted that last month, General Secretary Kim came to China to attend the commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. During his meeting with Xi, they pointed out the direction and drew a blueprint for further deepening China-DPRK relations.

The CPC and the Chinese government have always regarded ties with the DPRK from a strategic height and a long-term perspective, Li said, adding that maintaining, consolidating and developing the traditional friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries is China’s unwavering policy.

China, he said, is willing to work with the DPRK side to follow the joint guidance of the top leaders of the two parties and the two countries and promote new progress in bilateral ties.

The premier said China is ready to work with the DPRK to further carry forward their traditional friendship, deepen practical cooperation, and closely coordinate and cooperate in international and regional affairs.

Li also called on the two sides to strengthen multilateral collaboration, firmly safeguard and practice multilateralism, and promote the development of the international order in a more just and equitable direction.

Kim asked Li to convey his sincere greetings and best wishes to General Secretary Xi, and warmly welcomed the Chinese party and government delegation to the DPRK for the celebratory event, noting that under General Secretary Xi’s wise leadership, China has achieved tremendous accomplishments in socialist construction.

Noting that DPRK-China relations are unbreakable, Kim said that consolidating and developing the friendly cooperative ties between the two countries remains the unwavering stance of the party and government of the DPRK, regardless of changes in the international situation.

This serves the common interests of both sides and contributes to regional peace, stability and development, he added.

The DPRK, Kim said, firmly supports the one-China principle, resolutely opposes separatist acts of “Taiwan independence” and any external interference, and supports China’s position on issues related to Hong Kong, Xinjiang and Xizang.

Pyongyang is willing to maintain close high-level exchanges with Beijing, promote cooperation in various fields, strengthen multilateral collaboration, advance the development of their respective socialist causes, and bring more benefits to the people of the two countries, he added.

I visited more than 20 memorial facilities for Chinese People’s Volunteer Army martyrs in Pyongyang City, Kaesong City, Hicang County, South Pyongan Province, Unsan County, North Pyongan Province, and Jangjin-eup, South Hamgyong Province.
